Besides MRSA now, there is a new strain called CA-MRSA which is
community associated MRSA. There have been more findings of the "super
bug" away from hospitals and medical settings where many live in close
quarters like dorms, the military or in places where many have contact
with surfaces like exercise equipment or public pools and saunas.

The virus can live on surfaces for months so picking up MRSA can be
very easy. The best defenses are awareness, sanitation and a strong
immune system. A carrier of many germs are the bags and purses carried
by women and the back packs of everyone. We commonly set purses on the
floor of many places without thinking. Where do you set down your purse
when visiting a bathroom, shopping cart or a friend in the hospital? Do
you ever sanitize the bottom of your purse before you bring it home and
plop it on the the counter, table or chair? Kids toss back packs around
the same way. Do your kids drag along their back packs to the Doctor's
office and toss them on the floor or tables so they can play their hand
help games, etc? Food for thought.

This link has information about MRSA including MRSA and your pet.
