My beloved BooBoo was deaf.  In order to get his attention, I would turn
the overhead lights on and off.  It took a little training (giving him
treats when he came to me), but as long as he was awake, he came to the
door everytime the lights flashed.  All my other ferrets are trained to
a squeak toy.
