I was scared to death to make our annual journey to the vet for shots.
I lost my beloved Sandy last year (Sept. 9th) to an absolutely
unbelievable, unrecoverable reaction to her distempter shot. But I
believe for the protection of my animals (either from disease or psychos
that think they might be rabid), I felt the shots were necessary.

Toby went first and did just fine. Then Noel, who flinched, but did fine,
too.

Kyle was next. Since he has insulinoma, we got a blood stick on him. The
reading was 60, which is borderline, according to the vet. So Kyle is now
on a combination of the pred. he was already on and diaxozide (hope I
spelled that right). It's only available from one pharmacy in the area,
and it's pretty expensive. The (sort of) good news is that the vet had a
bottle of it from a nice family that donated it when they lost their
ferret. So I got it for free.

Slinky was last. His incision from the tumor surgery healed up great.
Doc got a good laugh out of the patchy way the fur is growing back in.
(I'm gonna have to get a pic of it on my website. It is so funny). Slink
has to go on a diet, though. He's eating too much baby food.

So out to the waiting room we went for our usual 20 minute observation
period. Good thing, too. I happened to glance down and see Toby vomit
out the door of the carrier. I waited a bit to see if it would happen
again, praying it wasn't a reaction. I figured it may just be nerves.
But then it happened again and he really started wretching. So I ran to
the desk to have someone take him back. I was really pissed off by the
slowness in responding of the desk staff and am considering writing a
nasty letter. Off Toby went to the back. He was back there for nearly
45 minutes. They gave him sub-q fluids and a shot of Benadryl. He
vomitted some more and passed a little bloody diarrhea. When he finally
calmed down, they brought him out and told us we could take him home or
leave him overnight. We decided to take him home.

I held Toby in my lap in the car, while the other 3 sulked in the carrier.
Thankfully, for once my fiance was with me, so he drove. We stopped to
get gas, and Toby barfed all over my lap then shook his head and flung it
onto the dash and door. We finally got him home. I put him on the ground
to prepare the "sick" cage. When he tried to crawl around, I noticed his
rear left foot dragging. But he tried to be very active and get into the
regular cage with the others.

This morning, his foot is still cocked to the side a bit, but not dragging
as much. He's to get Benadryl 3X's a day for 2 days. He looks so much
perkier and ate some Ferretvite for me. Plus there was a somewhat well
formed poop in the cage (typical of Toby, though, it was not in the
litterbox).

It's always gotta be somethin'. Sorry this was so long.
