To Gale-concerning names--Sid and Nancy were probably named for the British
singer Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy.  I'm a bit hazy on their
history but they were very crazy, drug addicts, self-absorbed, etc.  There
was a movie called Sid and Nancy about their lives.  I agree-weird names for
ferrets.
