The Domestic Ferret
 
"O, what mortal hand or eye..."
Hey, come back here!
you ball of Zen
whose zeal for ripened laundry
could not have been fashioned by a mere mortal!
 
Will you just listen?
Or stop a while?
I meant -- ouch!
But I am trying to describe
the indescribable.
 
On the paper! The paper!
You little sh- um,
Show me again why
you adore that empty carton
while your expensive playthings lie abandoned
 
And how I can see supernatural influence
in the bottlebrush of your tail
and the lightning speed with which
you ferry bottle caps one by one
to your lair beneath the dresser.
 
tell me; I am at my wits' end
and cannot fathom
how one furry doughnut
can reaffirm my belief in
a Benevolent Someone Out There,
 
and later in the afternoon
that same little wad of stuffing
can tip over the garbage
and reaffirm my belief
in His Opposite.
