ferret sighting in a novel

Hi Everyone!
 
I am currently reading the new Caleb Carr novel The Angel of Darkness and
there is a ferret mentioned in there named Mike!  He is a ferret who is used
in burgleries to "sniff" out items and in the novel is being used to find a
little girl.  I am not sure how accurate this is because I don't know if a
ferret could be trained to do this like a dog can but it is still neat to
see one crop up in a current novel.
