Heartguard will only kill immature worms.  Once a heartworm reaches
maturity, I don't think there is a way to rid a ferret of heartworms
without killing the ferret in the process.  That is why prevention is
the key.  Hopefully it is not heartworms.  There are many things that can
cause a ferret to cough: hairballs, heart problems of any kind, allergies,
asthma, blockages and probably other things I'm not aware of myself.  Any
persistent coughing that does not go away after giving hairball remedy
warrants a trip to the vet, just in case...
