Connie,

What worked for me was to put bedding material (towels, blankets, old
t-shirts) in the areas of the cage (and corners of the rooms) where I
didn't want the guys to go to the bathroom. We have a four-level cage,
with four litter boxes in the corners of the bottom level, which is wire
mesh with a pull-out tray underneath. Our six used to poop all over the
bottom level, but no more! Now they go only in the litter boxes. The
bedding trick worked right away in the cage, but took a few trys in some
corners of the house - had to replace some of the bedding, but eventually
they got the idea. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Nancy
