You did the right thing to keep going. I am so sorry though and I hope
he made it across. It pains me to see hurt animals on the road but it
is not safe to try and stop on the highway. I have instinctively braked
hard on side roads, only worrying afterward if there had been a car
behind me. A good car horn beep will shock your stunned animal back out
of his indeciveness to get going again. Don't know if this is true, but
I was once told to brake when you can but don't swerve (although it's
automatic) because then they can't estimate your path to avoid it.

A few thoughts...
he was a wild animal, if you had tried to get him he might have run into
another car even more frightened thinking a human was after him.

another car (trying to be careful of you and your stopped car) may not
have noticed the squirrel and hit him (I once pulled over on the side
of the road to help a turtle I had just passed who was manuevering his
way slowly across the street. I was approaching from a short distance
and he had made it half way when a car hit him. It haunts me that the
car was probably trying to avoid me and went out further and instead
hit the turtle I was heading over to help)

as much as I am an animal lover above all else, I heard a news story of
a woman who had stopped to help a dog that had been hit by a car. As
she was helping a car hit her and she passed away. It breaks my heart
that a wonderful animal lover had to pass so needlessly. She was one of
the good ones who cared enough to help, and it took her life.

Protect yourself and fellow humans first. Hopefully we can then do more
to help other animals. It breaks my heart too, there is not much as sad
as seeing an animal hurt on the side of the road. In that little
squirrel's honor (and in hope that he made it) make even a small
donation to a wildlife rehab facility
