(The original post asking the questions also appeared in the FML,
hence the name left on.)

Hi Becky

I have used close to 1,000 melatonin implants and have not seen an
allergic reaction or anything like your ferret's experience from the
melatonin implants.

As you and your vet should know, the implants do not dissolve (ie once
they are implanted the implant remains there for the rest of the
ferret's life), and you do not have to remove the old implants. It is
also unlikely to have an allergic reaction to melatonin. If your ferret
is allergic to melatonin it would have an allergic reaction every night
when it naturally makes its own melatonin. Likewise it would have an
allergic reaction everytime you give the melatonin tablet.

The 62 mile car ride, the 2 hour visit to your mom's house, a vaccine,
or something else is the likely cause for Snowball's problem and not
an allergic reaction to melatonin.

Hope that helps clear things up,
Jerry Murray, DVM

You are using a quote from Dr Wagner's paper about the 3 mg deslorelin
implant. Fortunately the 4.7 and the 9.4 mg implants do not have the
same side effect of a high rate of adrenal carcinomas after the implant
wears out. BTW the company no longer makes the 3 mg implant.

Hope that helps clear things up,

(Sukie note: I am wondering if this happened due to a mechanism
which has been described for another drug in the same class in
http://www.miamiferret.org/24hr_lupron.htm )
