To get an accurate weight for a pet as small as a ferret, you will need a
baby scale.  This is what our vet uses, and it works just fine.  I'm not
sure where you could find them, but you might try a medical supply store.
 
To describe in in detail -- this is a scale made for human babies.  You may
have seen one if you've ever been in a pediatrician's office.  It is a scale
with a wide, bassinette-like "holder" for infants.  This works great with
small animals.
