I support and agree with the opinion that in an emergency situation, or one
where there is little time to spare that local, hands-on assessment and
treatment should be sought, but...

This is not a flame nor is it any kind of personal attack, but I strongly
disagree with the post stating that Dr. Williams' posts (or any other
ferret vet's for that matter) should be limited! It's enough that he takes
time out of his busy schedule to read, let alone reply, to posts. I would
imagine that his schedule limits his ability and availability to post
'as per the rules'. I, for one, very much value his expertise, opinion,
concern, etc. He not only comes from a veterinarian and veterinary
pathologist's perspective, but is also owned by ferrets. He literally
knows them inside and out!

I've learned an awful lot from him in a very short period of time. Things,
IMO and experience, that other vets should most definitely know; things not
just specifically related to ferrets either. And no, he may not be better
than any of us here are, but... he certainly knows a whole lot more
(medically speaking) about ferrets than most of us here do!

Some of you know, and some may remember from my post about losing Renny
last year that I had a pancreas transplant not long before she passed away.
The reason I bring this up is that this particular type of transplant isn't
widely practiced, known, or even understood at present time. I have a very
hard time getting anyone to treat me locally because they simply do not
know, or understand the situation. I have h*ll trying to explain that
certain labs *should* be that incredibly high, etc. Most often I end up
calling MN to get a prescription for something that is very common and
quite unremarkable. Similarly, if one is trying to deal with a vet that
isn't educated about, or experienced with ferrets, then they have to turn
to, or rely upon someone over the phone (or from the FML) for assistance.
DIAGNOSIS/TREATMENT CAN BE DONE FROM AFAR!!

I am very grateful for, and feel very fortunate to have Dr. Williams
posting to the FML again!!!! There is still a lack of correct medical
information about ferrets! Like, for example, "they're just like cats",
told to me by a vet in my area who is deemed 'ferret-knowledgeable', or
knowing they should be placed on a heating pad before *and* after surgery!
Or that green poop alone is *not* a crisis! Basic things most people don't
know, or wouldn't necessarily think to think of at the 'right' time. I've
read mention in some of his posts that since he hasn't seen the ferret for
himself, or that a picture would be great... I mean, come on already, he
knows what he's doing.

Respectfully,
Sonya
