We were given a prescription of prednisolone/prelone syrup to adminster to
our ferret. It was clearly upseting her stomach and was impossible to get
into her without unbelievable stress though we tried many different methods.
The stress was doing her no good as she was very weak and it seemed to
contribute to her nausea as well which wasn't good as she needed food
desperately. Our doctor decided instead to administer a depot of medrol. He
said it was not really as good as the pred syrup, something about the medrol
depot not being equivalent in dosage as it releases steadily for 6 to 8
weeks rather than surges of the medicine at each individual dosage of the
syrup. Can someone explain why prelone syrup is better than the longlasting
medrol shot? I.E. why are surges of medication better than constant
medication? With pred we have had to wean off the dosage. Does the depot
wean itself off by gradually diminishing the medicine releasing into the
blood? Anyways, this route seems to be doing the trick so far (it has been
about 2 weeks). Thanks. Charlene
