I have heard from Dr. Bruce Williams, veterinary pathologist with
expert knowledge of ferrets and he added some information.

He says that as with herpesvirus, poxviruses are pretty species
specific, and if someone looks long enough in a given species finding
one is pretty likely.

The big thing is that most species typically only have a skin reaction,
but some other species can get severe systemic illness.
