Thanks everyone, who answered my question about what do about my ferrets'
altered litterbox behavior after I "boarded" them at a friend's house for
a week.
 
Putting food on the second level seems to be working (no "accidents"
for one day and one night, but I'm not popping the cork on my champagne
bottle just yet).
