Well our little dachshund (not well bred - between miniture and standard
and between smooth and long hair) called Low Rider is not at all snappy.
And would be most suitable for the situation you are in.  Its my
understanding that the breed tends for lap warmers like that.  So far
absolutely no interaction problems with the other small critters or the
goats.  At her short height she isn't a good buddy for our hormonally
charged German Shepherd bitch.  The GSH dog just looks at the daxy with
befuddlement.
 
I've long called dachshunds "ferret dogs" although its literally "badger
dog" another mustelid.  They were bred to hunt in a somewhat similar
fashion to ferrets but for the fur bearing larger animals.
