Many online stores offer specials that are not advertised on their web
sites to various groups of customers.  They may send the offer via email to
their customer list, advertise them in magazines, TV ads, and hard copy
catalogs, etc.
 
When you go to check out, there is a place to enter a coupon code.  The
code tells them what the offer is and the discount is applied to the order.
