First thanks to all who confirmed my suspicions of charlies behavior
(hence I have appended his name to Bonnie Prince Charlie :-)  ).
 
Unfortunately, I was still getting his cage ready, had "ferret-proofed" a
bedroom, or so I thought.  He somehow got to the window sill, and got out
through the screen!!!  anyone in the Prescott, AZ area please keep an I
out.  I will post a picture if I can get one from the humane society
where I adopted him.
