I tried this idea a few years ago - both my ferrets and my cats tended to
use it as a litterbox.  Potpie would dig and dig and dig and sneeze and
sneeze and sneeze, then poop.  Some types of play sand are too fine, and
tend to get into their noses - be careful.  We couldnt break them of the
'use the stuff in the box as litter' habit, so we stopped letting them have
the sand.  Hope you have better luck.
