I found this great stuff.  It's made by Bissell (sp?).  It is intended for
vehicle carpets, but it works great on home carpets.  It comes in a black
can with a brush attached to the top.  I used to have beige carpets in my
last apartment and when I left, they were still beige.  You can get it in
hardware stores/vehicle sections of department stores and is only $5 - $7
a can.  Works great.
