Yes, pet insurance is for real, but I've never heard of them covering
anything other than cats and dogs.  The insurance doesn't cover routine
stuff (though does require you to do the routine stuff, of course), but
can be a big help if something major happens early in your pet's life.
 
If we can only convince them to handle ferrets...
