Hi,
I recently made queries to find out if Idaho is a Kill & Test or a
Quarantine state with regard to Ferrets. I was directed to the Animal
Health Department (208-332-8560) and spoke with Dr. Ayer (sp?). He found
the reference in "The Protocol for Animal Isolation - Animal Bites and
Rabies Prophylaxis". The first good news therein is that it group together
"Dogs, Cats and Ferrets". YAY! Next, he found that in Section F part 1
states that Ferrets with current Rabies vaccinations can either be killed &
tested, or may be subject to a 10 day quarantine depending on the OWNER's
desires. Unvaccinated ferrets will ALWAYS be killed & tested. Now, the
only way the quarantine will not happen is if litigation is involved and the
Judge orders the kill & test procedure.

I was told that should a bite incident happen, I should make sure the Humane
Society officer calls the Animal Health Department - as protocol indicates.
I also asked how I could get a copy of this section and was told that all I
need to do is submit the request in writing and cite the Freedom of
Information Act. The request should be sent to:

Idaho Department of Agriculture
Division of Animal Industries
2270 Old Penitentiary Road
Boise, Idaho 83712

So, Idaho ferret owners, be sure to get your babies vaccinated! It could
save their life!

P.S. - Kelleen is still having computer problems. If you need to get in
touch with her, you can use me as a go-between.

Dooks,
