I'm a little behind on my reading, but I couldn't let this go without
comment:

I couldn't agree with you more.  I got my fuzzy from a friend of a friend
who was working long hours, and was simply too tired to play with her
enough.  When I first met him, I immediately asked "What's in the cage?",
and he was surprised at the way my eyes lit up when he answered, "A
ferret." He told me later that at that moment he thought to himself, "If
I ever have to give her away, I'm going to see if this lady wants to take
her first."
 
Two months later, after he'd started his new job, I asked him what I needed
to know before getting a ferret of my own.  Then he told me that he was
thinking about giving her away.  I had to make some arrangements first, but
I picked her up the next weekend.  The point of all this: he didn't ask a
price for her or any of her things, even down to the ferretone, hammock or
kibble.  All he asked is that I give her a good home, which I have tried my
best to do.  And if -- heaven forbid -- I ever had to give her away, that's
all I would ask, as well.
