(Continued from Buddy's Story: part 8 . . .)

It is said that when something traumatic happens that everything starts
moving in slow motion. Well, that is exactly what happened from Jeffery's
perspective. A lot of things happened in the next few seconds.

As Jeffery hung there by his one paw, he was glad that he was such a buff
ferret. He had been working out over the past few weeks by sliding under
the litter box on his back and lifting the litter box with his legs. This
exercise proved very helpful now as he grabbed onto the lip of the shelf
with his other paw and then easily pulled himself up onto the shelf. At
this same time he could hear Cleo yelling that the human was getting up and
was headed toward the stairs to find out what had made that noise. Jeffery
knew that he could not let the human find him out of the cage. He had to
get back in the cage but the call of the raisins was too great to ignore.
He quickly turned around and that was when he saw them! Right there was a
bag of raisins! He had never seen raisins before but somehow he "knew"
what they were. It was almost like a sixth sense. Well he could figure it
out later, he had to get some raisins and get back to the cage. He ran
over to the bag and luckily it was open. He stuck his head in the bag and
grabbed a mouthful of raisins. He would have loved to sit and enjoy them
but he would have to wait until he got back to the cage.

At this time he could hear Cleo yelling that the human was on the stairs and
coming fast. He ran to the edge of the shelf and looked down. The floor
was covered with glass from the broken jar. He knew that the chance of
jumping and landing on the glass was quite good. He had to find another way
down or he had to find something to land on. As his eyes were quickly
scanning the floor, he saw the cat. The cat was just standing there looking
in the direction that the human was coming from. Jeffery smiled to himself.
"Well, it's now or never," thought Jeffery, and with that he jumped.

His aim was perfect. He landed directlly on top of the cat. What happened
immediately following his landing was a little confusing to Jeffery. All he
knew was that his impact knocked the cat to the ground and then suddenly
Jeffery found himself a few feet off the ground. The strange thing was that
he was still attached to the back of the cat. When he landed, he had
grabbed the cat with his claws and had forgotten to let go. Once they hit
the ground, for the second time, the cat screamed and took off running.
When the cat passed Jeffery's cage, Jeffery let go and jumped.

Jeffery had misjudged the speed in which the cat was running and so upon
hitting the ground Jeffery rolled a few times before he came to a stop.
Once he stopped rolling, he ran for his cage. He was a little dizzy from
all that had happened and he misjudged the cage door by about three inches.
He was so surprised when he smacked into the side of the cage that he almost
swallowed his raisins. He shook his head and then tried for the cage door
again. This time he made it. He could now hear the lady yelling something
in the kitchen. He was so glad that he was safely in his cage with the
door ... He had forgotten all about it! The door was still open! He
reached over and grabbed the door and pulled it closed right as one of the
cats from downstairs came into the room. He reached out and tried to grab
the hook to lock the door but it kept slipping out of his paw! He could
hear the lady coming toward the room. He could hear Cleo yelling at him
that she was coming. Finally he was able to grab to hook and drop it into
place right as the lady came around the corner. She walked over to his cage
and Jeffery just stood there acting like nothing happened. She stood there
looking at him for a minute and then shaking her head she turned around and
walked back into the kitchen. Jeffery went over to the food dish and placed
his raisins in the dish. As he stood there admiring his prize, Cleo came
over to the cage.

"Are you all right?" Cleo asked.

Jeffery looked at Cleo, and with a smile on his face said, "I am now."
