After finally giving up my beloved waterbed (Boy, do I miss that warm bed
in the winter!) I switched to a traditional bed. A couple of my ferrets
decided it was time to burrow into the boxspring. Having just shelled out
600 bucks for the mattress and boxspring, I wasn't willing to donate it as
the newest ferret toy.

So I locked up all the ferrets, flipped the boxspring upside down, and
staple gunned a sheet to the frame - spacing the staples only about a
quarter inch apart. Put the bed back together. Let the worst offenders
out to try and get in. Hurray! Success - they were totally frustrated
by the stronger covering on the boxspring. Now they don't even try.

Good luck!
