I've found the easiest way to check for deafness is to let all the ferrets
out to play, usually in their playpen, and bang on a pan with a metal
spoon.  Anyone who runs and hides can hear.  Anyone who doesn't is probably
deaf and needs to be checked further.
 
This was how we checked all our litters of kits, no deaf ones.
