I use plexi-glass. I place a dowel rod (using paneling nails) on each
side of the door frame by the door jam just wide enough to easily slide
the plexi-glass down in and make sure the dowel rod is placed so the
bottom is on the floor so they can't push out on a corner. The dowel
rods are square and can be painted the same color of the trim. I put
them on the opposite side of the way the door closes so they don't
obstruct the door when closed. Cost is minimal and set up is so easy
even I can do it without difficulty.

Plexi-glass comes in different thickness and heights and can be cut to
what size you need. I purchase mine at the local hardware store. The
advantage of plexi-glass barriers is that you don't have to close the
door on the room so the temperature of the room will be the same temp
as the house. When doors are closed rooms can become too warm or too
cold and you won't know till you go into the room.

Supplies needed -
- Measuring tape
- Hammer
- Plexi-glass sized to door frame width and preferable height wanted (I
  use 29" high)
- Dowel rods (I use 2ft high square rods)
- Paneling nails (If you don't want to use nails you can use wood glue)
- Paint (I paint before I put them up but can be painted after)
- Stickers to put on plexi-glass so you don't forget it's there! (I've
fallen over mine a couple times when I was in a hurry and not paying
attention. - I buy wall stickers at the dollar store.)

If you have the ability, you can frame the plexi-glass in wood, making
a slit so the plexi-glass is in the wood frame, then hinge it to one
side of the door frame and latch it on the other. Then you can open the
plexi-glass door instead of stepping over the barrier. This works well
too but takes more skill than I have.
