Your dedication to the purity of your crusade to safeguard the couch
without altering it is impressive. When we bought our latest couch, we
took the easy way out. We realized the legs of the couch just screwed
into mounting brackets on each corner, so we just removed all four legs,
and set the couch flat on the floor.

Something to watch for, once your weasels realize the bottom of the
couch is a lost cause: One of my girls took to obsessively burrowing
under the couch cushions and digging at the fabric underneath (which is
usally thinner than the upholstery, and would eventually give way), and
we finally (after trying everything from repeated scoldings, to spray
bottles of water, to bitter apple) just bought a sturdy slipcover for
the thing (which we then had to meticulously tuck under the bottom of
the flat-on-the-floor couch to keep her from crawling under it). She
finally, eventually, after a couple months making no progress through
the slipcover, and a couple of encounters with cayenne pepper that must
have 'accidentally' gotten sprinkled into the folds of the fabric in
her favorite digging spots, gave up.
