I see so many sad posts about ferrets that are at the Bridge. Even
sadder are the little ones left, cage mates and buddies, who grow sad
and despondent. I believe it really helps them to have a chance to say
goodbye to their departed friend. I think it really helped the healing
process, because I know our furry friends grieve just like we do. I also
think they need closure just like we do.

When my dog Saki was hit by a car several years ago, I brought her into
the house and all the critters said goodbye to her. Caesar was a puppy at
the time. He nudged Saki, kissed her and when he couldn't get her up, he
laid down by her until she was cold. None of the fur babies looked for
Saki after that.

So, when my precious Spunky needed help to the bridge last Spring, I had
a mobile vet, that makes house calls, come to my home. It was easier on
Spunky because she didn't have to go to the nasty vets office again.
After she was gone, everyone said goodbye. Again lots of nudging, kissing
and pawing by everyone.

In both cases, after everyone had enough time, I took the body to the vet
for a private cremation. I always seem to have cute boxes and urns, so I
took a box or urn that reflected that baby's own personality for them to
put the ashes in. They both sit today at home, safe and warm with their
collars beside them.

I dread the day I have to say goodbye to Frankie or Poncho. I think if it
is possible, I will do what I did with Saki and Spunky. My guys are still
young, 3 and 2 respectively and hopefully I won't have to face that for 10
years.
