I too had an abundance of water bottles, with no wires.  I went to home
depot and bought springs.  They are in the nuts and bolts department , are
about 6 inches long, and not very heavy.  You can either just attach them
at both ends with the little coil at the end or put a small lanyard hook
on each end, as I did.  They work even better than the wire ever did.
