WE have several altered, non-descented ferrets, both male and female.  No
problems to speak of.  All of them combined have probably sprayed less than
5-10 times in the past couple of years.  Even when they do the odor clears
rapidly and doesn't linger.
 
My understanding is that descenting an older ferret puts them at risk if the
vet's knife slips just a little and nicks something it would be best left
unnicked.  besides if they should ever get outside, it does leave them with a
defensive "weapon".
 
Others have described a few ferrets that seem to have little control of the
scent sacks and spray on a regular basis.  If that's the case than it might
be justified.  My opinions only.
