Both Ferretone and Linatone contain a high content of fatty acids. Although
some have suggested that the high vitamin A content poses a threat, there
are no cases of vitamin A overdoses that I have been able to discover(this
does not mean it doesn't happen, just that it's not apparent).

The high fatty acids, however, have been clinically indicated in ferrets for
a number of digestive disorders. A one time overdose may cause some
digestive/intestinal problems or discomfort very temporarily. The good news
is that even in cases where too much of this good thing caused any problems
over time, the problems abated once these supplements were ceased providing
it is done in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, these digestive problems are
not always presented clearly, and the problem can develop insidiously and
appear unremarkable for some time. According to a number of top *ferret*
vets, Linatone/Ferretone should be limited to very small amounts (about 6-10
drops a week on average). This sum resulted from the number of
professionally answered questionnaires specifically designed to provide a
clear response and to help resolve any debate. The exception is if you are
using 8 in 1 ferret food, you will need these supplements as these are
purposely excluded in the food(nice marketing!).

I find this Linatone/Ferretone very helpful during meds or nail clipping
time, although there is a temptation to use it more because they go crazy
for it. You can cut down the Ferretone/Linatone with Canola oil without
effecting any taste while providing a slightly more inert yet palatable
treat. Another supplement that is great during meds is Nutri-Cal. A sticky
substance some ferrets prefer straight from the tube, while others like it
mixed with a little warm water.

You should know these supplements have sparked some discussion ranging from
the ambiguous to the ambivalent. And there are those who feel none should
be administered. Others have even proposed alternative solutions which may
indeed be more hazardous than any original potential presented. Some have
been irresponsible enough to compare it to sugar syrup in humans. Just
remember these are nutritional supplements and should therefore be treated
accordingly. *Careful* moderation is the key for a normal ferret (is there
such a thing? ;-); one drop goes a long way with these critts.

best wishes,
until next time,
