Subject: Dishwasher detergent harms ferret

I am hoping this message will help prevent some little ferret from
undergoing the pain ours did. Luckily it has a happy ending. Last week our
ferret was throwing up so much that nothing was getting past her stomach.
Upon much investigation, x-rays, barrium, etc. the vet thought that she
must have eaten something bad that harmed her stomach and made it so
irritated that she couldn't keep anything down. (I hope I am paraphrasing
correctly.) Luckily, the barrium soothed things enough that now she is fine.
What happened? We are not sure, but I think that she ate granules of
dishwasher detergent that accidently spilled onto the floor. I feel SO bad.
I was putting the soap into the dishwasher one day, when the spring-loaded
detergent compartment didn't catch. It had flung the soap all over the
kitchen floor, and although I'd cleaned most of it up, I guess I forgot
about the stuff the went under the fridge. I will never do that again. I
hope this note warns others about potential harm.
