Just in case anyone draws any incorrect conclusions from my mention about
Spot having had kidney disease -- he did NOT have growths, and the cause of
his damage was very well known.  He'd been through a very bad strain of ECE
which lasted a number of months and left him with damage, so he kept having
bouts of dehydration which sub-Q injections weren't enough to control at
times.  Others with long experience will have run into similar things or
read of such cases -- not uncommon, though I hope they someday will be.
