ODE TO SPANKY

There's a hole in my heart where Spanky used to be.
He was a ornery ball of fur but will always be a part of me.
His life was lived for to many years in pain
I can not let his death be the same.
 
I will release him I know that is what I have to do, but to release him,
means I lose a part of me too.
 
I had him for three short years
I hope he new I loved him and he  had no more fears.
 
I know I have to do for him what is best but it is this  part of owning
ferrets where my love is put to the test.
 
It is such a somber day when I have to do my part
For it seems to hurt more when the head rules the heart.
 
There is a hole in my heart where Spank passed through
and once again I am losing part of me to.
