Nasty little buggers, aren't they?
 
When I lived in GA, the ex used to hunt quite often & come home w/
chiggers.  The way that he got rid of them was by applying nail polish
over them, which he said "suffocated" them.
 
Now, he did turn out to be quite a, ahem, storyteller (that's part of why
he's an EX), but it sounded fairly plausible to me.  I wouldn't recommend
putting nail polish on a fert, but maybe the concept can be applied in a
different way??
