We had one ferret who exhibited this symptom.  The cause turned out to be a
greatly enlarged (but not malignant) spleen.  The splenectomy was uneventful
and Small was robustly healthy for his remaining 6 years.
 
If your vet thinks the spleen might be causing the problem, you will want to
have the surgery done promptly.  If the spleen ruptures, your ferret will
bleed to death.
