Metal ear tags are commonly used on laboratory ferrets. That would also
explain the biting that was reported if the animal is traumatized or
afraid.

Did you ask her where she got the ferrets from.

A special tool is needed to release the ear tag w/o causing damage to
the ear itself. Most vets can remove them.
