It is our policy here at Morning Starr Animal Sanctuary that with ferrets
that are "found" we keep them for at lease one month until the owner can
be found and we are sure that no one is looking for them. That is our
policy but I have heard of other "rescues" where a ferret was adopted
after being found roaming to a family after arriving at the shelter 15
min. earlier. That family did adopt the ferret but was not happy about
that so they called us and as it turned out we did find the owner of
the ferret, which is always the best thing. I would encourage all
sanctuaries to give ferrets the best chance of being reunited with its
family at any time as this is so much less stressful for them. Owners
need at least a month because they are not always sure who to call when
their ferret goes missing and this takes more time than a dog or cat.
