Some years ago, she came to us. Old, skinny and what little fur she had
was faded, most of the color gone. Just a small bag of bones her humans
no longer cared to look at. While the youngsters bounced, dooked and
played, she was content to go lick a bit of Susie's duck soup and sniff
about. A small lick on my nose was her way of saying "thank you". She
grew her fur back in for us, a fine gray-brown sandy color.

And suddenly, she was getting older and I knew the day was coming. It
did when she asked me "can I go now?" as only she could, "I am so tired".
Somehow she had lived for us from being turned in in her 7th year to
being a fully-furred little dear ferret of 10 years. Thruogh tears I
said "yes, you may go" and thus in the quiet of a deepest sleep ended
the sweet, loving life of Nikita Sandie Ferret.

At the Rainbow Bridge, a new soul has arrived. To ferret moms and dads
and animal lovers everywhere, there is no need to respond. I share your
tears and pain at each person's loss - and when you have a shelter and
are old as she was, the emptiness doubles every time.
