We had a Midwest Cage that I revamped (put in 2 extra levels and got rid
of the little "perch" type shelves...)
 
What I did with the bottom was cut a piece of vinyl flooring a touch
larger than the inside dimensions of the tray and set the cage on that -
it sort of "turned up" at the edges and kept the food/litter/waste from
falling into the groove.
 
We've since gotten rid of it and we replaced all our cages with Martin's
Cages..  3 million times better!!! :)
