Dog food is fine for an occasional treat -- certainly much better than
things like cereal or soda pop -- but you are right that the balance of
nutrients is off and it lacks the needed taurine levels of heart and eye
health.  GOOD SPOTTING on your part!
 
They do fine at low temps unless very young, old, or sick, or post-op;
high temps are the danger zone for ferrets.
