Another vote for newspaper.  Like Laura, I do not use litter or a box - I
use newspaper.  In my case, because one of the ferrets refused to use a
box - but we have been very happy with it.  And my one smallish daily
paper provides way more than we need, with one main "bathroom" in the
ferret room (where they spend most of the day), and a few others scattered
thruout the house... (Where the bathrooms are not on linoleum, I put a
sheet of plastic under the paper.) Not too stinky, but i only have 2
ferrets... And, as Laura points out, free.  the only disadvantage - all
those rolled-up papers take up a lot of space in the trash.
 
It works for us!
