Let's see ... For me, the BEST number is always one more than I have ...
however, three is a good solid number - provides companionship of their
own kind, playmates when you can't be there, and lessens the shock of
losing an "only buddy" when one passes.  One is a good number, if you have
one like my little Taz - who wants to be an only ferret.  But one is too
many, if you can't afford the proper food and medical care, and a permanent
commitment to their needs and welfare.  Good luck, and watch out for ferret
math....
