Bob C. recently answered a question about ships being named after ferrets.

Supposedly the ferret was the official mascot of the Continental Navy in
Massachusetts; at least that was one of the selling points we used in the
attempt to get ferrets legalized in Mass. several years ago.

In more Mass. news, the Boston Globe 9/26 page B1 City and Region ran an
article on 'exotic' pets that are legal or illegal in Mass. Under legal,
they wrote 'ferret' with a photo of a black footed ferret (!) The article
went on to say that ferrets were legalized several years ago but that not
everyone was celebrating, since a large number of them end up in shelters.

If any Mass. folks want to write a letter to the editor to clarify about
the BF footed ferret/domestic ferret misinformation, and also to talk about
the very serious problem with all regional shelters being saturated etc.,
here's a good opportunity. You can write to <[log in to unmask]> or Letters
to the Editor, Boston Globe, PO Box 2378, Boston, MA 02107-2378. Letters
shoule be fewer than 200 words, include name, address, daytime phone.
