Can I just say that that happened to me the first year I had my girls!  So
disgusting!  I was absolutely horrified.  I too started putting a water
catcher underneath the bottle.  After that it never happened again, thank
God!!!
 
I too had a problem with my plastic trays collecting food which would then
be dampened by water bottle drips and eventually "grow" maggots.  My simple
solution was to install "drip catchers" under the water bottles.
