The best method for removing a tick is to coat it with petroleum jelly,
and when it comes out to breathe grab it with tweezers and place it in a
container with some nail polish remover or embed it fully into petroleum
jelly.
 
Yes, improper removal can lead to some pretty nasty problems including
serious infections.
