This is entirely possible.  I went into our Petco yesterday to buy some
food and, of course checked out the ferrets.  The guy who was working at
the cash register proudly told me that he was getting the 'brown' ferret
that night and another employee was getting the 'white' one.  He was upset
because there had been a silver and that's the one he had wanted, but
someone had bought it before he got the chance to claim it.
 
Even if that was the case the employee in question should not be telling
customers things like that about ferret/minks.  Is that even possible?
