A local Petco in our area had made contact with one of our members. The problem -- a new shipment of baby ferrets that could not have been more than 5 weeks in age (one little guy still had one eye closed)! Through the combined efforts of Petco and WSFA these babies were taken off the sales floor and turned over to volunteers who are supervising their feeding and growth. The babies (who number 6 and are some remarkable colors) will be returned to Petco for sale when they grow to be adequate size and age. The manager and district manager of Petco (who through Petco's continued support to educate their staff -- and WSFA's vigilance in monitoring stores) supported the removal of the babies, and the further education of their staff. Petco has voiced a strong support for rescue/shelter work by allowing WSFA materials to be posted along with the distribution of information with the sale of any ferret. This is similar to the work they do with kittens and cats. There is currently work being done to provide a local supply of baby ferrets to the stores that will continue to sell ferrets for customers who will want to buy a kit (two of the local Petco's have stopped selling ferrets). This will help out some local breeders and hopefully prevent the distribution of kits who are too small to be sold. This relationship with Petco has come from many devoted members who persevered with diligence, patience and MOSTLY tact and kindness. It's a small start, but it's a start! Two ferrets who were rescued (one from the docks at Everett and sure death at the hands of animal control) will be having adrenal surgery thanks to the generous donation by a member. Our little Mama ferret, who was rescued with nursing kits, has found a loving home along with the kids! Many thanks to all involved as the WSFA reorganizes and moves forward in the cause of educating the public about ferrets and providing respite to those fuzzies who are homeless, ill and injured.
