Last week OP had a really bad hairball obstruction. Sat. (after the vet
closed) he vomited semidigested food. He had no stools. I watched him,
gave Hagen's hairball remedy, and Ferretvite. He started eating again on
his own and had pooped out a bunch of hair. By Mon, he was back to his old
self. He is a rescue that is supposed to be about 5. Doesn't look it or
act it. His teeth don't look that old, but they do have tarter buildup
from the Cat Chow diet and lack of dental hygiene. This past Sat. (after
the vet went home) he started having stools the color and consistancy of
Bold mustard, maybe a little firmer. There is a noticeable odor. Not
overpowering, but definitely rank. He's playing, eating, drinking,
maintaining his weight, and none of the other ferrets seem to be affected.
I looked up coccidia in the Archives. It sounds like this but I'm not
sure. Most people mention green poop. I only saw some green during the
passing of the hairball. Could this be a stress response to that problem?
I would appreciate some input from anyone who has had experience with this.
I'm waiting for my vet to return my call now. I also have 4 cats, 3 other
ferrets, a bird, and a domestic skunk. And 4 wild gray squirrels being
raised for release, which are isolated, although sometimes the ferrets
sneak into that bathroom. Will they also have to be treated? I have not
seen any of these symptoms in any of the other animals. OP has been in my
home for about 3 months with good health. The most previous owner (the
original rescuer) had him for almost a year with good health.
